Larus & Bro. promoted their new menthol Yukon as an economy cigarette. Savings of up to 25 cents per carton over the major brands was meant to entice the frugal smoker. Yukon packs, along with non-menthol Domino, included a coupon that was redeemable for free merchandise. However, this coupon turned out to be a troublemaker. Yukon was sold in state prisons, and the coupon was the culprit when inmates at one facility rioted---the coupons were being used as money. A carton containing ten Yukon packs normally cost a smoker $2.75, but Yukon was promoted on a regular basis with special offers such as two free packs or a pound of Maxwell House coffee or five pounds of Domino sugar with each carton purchased.
