C To C 'Cape To Cairo' Christmas 1941
A decorative metal Christmas cigarette tin that was issued in December, 1941. The box contained a ration of 14 "C to C" cigarettes made from South African tobacco.
It is embossed in the upper right corner with the facing gold-metal medallion busts of Mrs. Isie K. Smuts (the wife of Jan Smuts) and Mr. Jan Smuts (the Prime Minister of South Africa during World War 2). In the lower left-hand corner it was inscribed with a 3/4 view of a Springbok's head issuant from a red letter "V" for Victory / Victorie and the label "Kersfees - Christmas - 1941".
Inside was a message in both English and Afrikaans side-by-side:
"With South Africa's | "Suid Afrika is |
pride and gratitude." | trots en dankbaar." |
some were also signed by both Mr. and Mrs. Smuts.
The tin was similar to Christmas gift boxes issued to British troops during the Boer Wars and World War 1 containing chocolate bars and tobacco.
