Brand Woodbine

'Woodbine' is a brand of Irish cigarette made by Gallaghers, super long (120 mm) and short (70 mm), 10, 20 or 50 cigarettes in a pack, hard and wide flat hard box pack.

The brand is noted for their extremely strong unfiltered cigarettes. The brand was massively popular in the early 20th century, especially with soldiers during the first world war. Now the brand is far less popular as smokers become more aware of the health effects of tobacco smoking and have switched to lower tar brands, or have given up completely. Unfiltered cigarettes are now uncommon.

The brand is commonly mentioned in literature from the early 20th century due to its popularity at the time. It has been sometimes suggested that the brand is now most popular among elderly smokers. This is nicely illustrated by the character Bert Baxter in Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole books, who avidly smokes the brand as a stereotypical Woodbine smoker.
