History

Peter Jackson was a tobacco firm that opened up in London around the turn of the twentieth century. Its most famous brand was du Maurier, which Peter Jackson began to manufacture in 1903 on the request of famed British actor Sir Gerald du Maurier. (For more information, go to Brand du Maurier.)

Peter Jackson’s manufacturing operations in Great Britain became absorbed into the International Tobacco Company, which in turn was bought by Gallaher in 1934; Jackson’s overseas operations (as Peter Jackson (Overseas) Ltd.) continued independent until it was bought by B.A.T. in 1955. Currently, Peter Jackson-brand cigarettes are sold in Australia and Canada.

In Australia, the six most popular brands amongst under-18s in Victoria, in order, are Peter Jackson, Winfield, Longbeach, Benson and Hedges, Horizon and Marlboro. Five of these brands also feature in the seven most popular adult brands. The most advertised brand of cigarettes in all stores surveyed was Peter Jackson, which was also the brand most commonly sold in shops.

In Canada, Peter Jackson Virginia, a plain-end, regular-sized cigarette, was introduced in 1933 by the Tuckett Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of Imperial Tobacco Canada. This brand was likely discontinued around 1961, when Peter Jackson Filter Kings were brought on to the market. In 1966, Imperial closed the Tuckett Tobacco plant and took over Tuckett's products. Peter Jackson Extra Light was introduced in 1978, and Peter Jackson Lights sometime in the early 1980s--the latter brand was far less commonplace than the other two.

Peter Jackson was given a new pack design and relaunched in 2006 as a discount brand. Two new offshoots were also introduced at the time: Peter Jackson Smooth Flavour (in an orange pack, with a ”tar” rating comparable to Light), and a full-flavoured Peter Jackson Menthol. In 2007, with the banning of "light" and "mild" from Canadian cigarette packages, Peter Jackson Light was renamed Select Flavour, and Extra Light was renamed Mellow Flavour.

In 2008, Imperial Tobacco Canada ceased their Canadian manufacturing operations; today, all of Imperial's brands (including Peter Jackson) are produced in Mexico and shipped to Canada for sale.
