These were designed to compete with Marlboro in the early '80s and marketed in at least California and the Midwest U.S. They were dropped from the product lineup in less than a year. They were known as "Newport reds", in retail stores.

I wrote to the company and they apologized and sent me a carton of Newport menthols (which I couldn't use.) They were known as "Newport reds", in the stores.
