Year after year Camel Cigarettes are at the top of the annual list of the most internationally recognized commercial names. This fact is a testimony to the great care that R.J. Reynolds, the man and the company, has paid to advertising from the very beginning. From the introduction of Camel Cigarettes in 1913 to the incarnation of Joe Camel in 1988, the advertisers have shown a genius for capturing the public's attention and establishing a brand name that is widely recognized, by smokers and non-smokers alike. This new book celebrates the first fifty years of Camel advertising and packaging. Over 450 color photographs capture the rich images used to promote Camel goods.
In 1988 R.J. Reynolds gave the anti-smoking movement an emblem for the corrupting influence of tobacco advertising. Introduced with the slogan "smooth character," Joe Camel was a cartoon version of the dromedary (known as Old Joe) that has appeared on packages of Camel cigarettes since 1913.

In 2008 the packaging of Camel cigarettes in the EU was rebranded for a more modern look. Notably the border lines were removed, and the image of a Camel altered. The design is not too different, but effects all three strengths of Cigarette. The Tobacco blend remains the same.

==History==
The original version of the Kent Micronite cigarette filter used crocidolite, a form of asbestos, from 1952 until at least mid-1956. Cigarettes from intact, unopened packs of the brand from this period were examined. One filter contained approximately 10 mg of crocidolite. Crocidolite structures were found in the mainstream smoke from the first two puffs of each cigarette smoked. At the observed rates of asbestos release, a person smoking a pack of these cigarettes each day would take in more than 131 million crocidolite structures longer than 5 pm in 1 year. These observations suggest that people who smoked the original version of this cigarette should be warned of their possible substantial exposure to crocidolite during the 1950s.

An epidemic of asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma has occurred among workers at the factory where the filters for the original Kent cigarette were made.

KENT'S micronite filter was made out of asbestos. Many people who smoked these cigarettes came down with mesothelioma, the hallmark cancer that results from asbestos exposure.
